Wanchese Assembly of God

History

"Where there is no vision, the people perish" (Proverbs 29:18). In 1977, the members of Wanchese Assembly of God caught a glimpse of a vision for its children - a Christian school, with Christian teachers, and a Christian curriculum. Pastor Robert D. Smith, Sr. became the "smith that bloweth the coals in the fire and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work" (Isaiah 54:16) and Wanchese Christian Academy was born.

The first year in operation, 1978, students were enrolled in grades K5 through 12. Rev. William Skipper was the principal, guiding WCA through the precepts of the A.C.E. program. With polyester uniforms, ties, and new paces, the school was launched! Each succeeding pastor benefited the school. In 1982, under the pastorate of Rev. John Chase, Sr., WCA had a change of principal to Allen Kister and a change in curriculum to A-Beka bringing combined grades and open classroom teaching. Also, under Rev. Chase, a sports program was initiated and school spirit blossomed. It was during the growth spurt in 1989 that Rev. Robert (Bob) Smith, Jr. became principal.

Dr. David Dalton became the pastor in 1994. He and his wife, Ruth, with the whole-hearted help of many of the church members, brought into existence the Whole Ministries Center, a complex that houses a lovely kitchen, snack area, and dining room, as well as a long-dreamed-of gymnasium. Under Dr. Dalton's ministry, K4 was added to WCA. Upon the departure of Rev. Smith in 2003, WCA was placed under the leadership of Mrs. Cheree Peters. Mrs. Peters held this position until 2005. Today, WCA is under the leadership of alumna, Rachel Meekins Thompson.  If you are interested in exploring the opportunities Christian Education provides, please call our school office at 252-473-5797.

Our children spend the majority of their young lives in the classroom. Many Christian parents take advantage of the opportunities offered by a Christian school to help train their child up in the way that he or she should go (Proverbs 22:6).

It is exciting to know that there are 923 Assemblies of God/Association of Christian Teachers and Schools (ACTS) sponsored day schools and childcare centers within the United States. Christian teachers have approximately 1260 instructional contact hours per year in a day school and over 2,000 in a childcare center. This allows a tremendous amount of direct Christian discipleship and evangelism to occur in this school system.

Private education accounts for 118,296 students within Assemblies of God/ACTS schools. According to the most current statistics from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), approximately 10% of all U.S. students are educated in private schools. Between now and 2014, the number of students in private schools is expected to continue to increase by 5%.
